Xiaomi To Discontinue MIUI After 13 Years, Could Replace It With MiOS: Tipster

Xiaomi could replace its 13-year-old MIUI, the company’s popular user interface built on top of Android, with a MiOS. The information comes from a Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station, who has had a decent track record regarding leaks. This could be the most significant change in the company’s direction since its global vice president and head of Indian operations, Manu Jain, left it.

Tipster Claims MIUI14 Will Be The Last Official Version

Digital Chat Station, in a post on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, mentions that MIUI14 will be the last official version of Xiaomi’s MIUI. Translating the post, it states MIUI14 is a mature design, with only the dynamic screen animations lagging. For those catching up, Xiaomi’s MIUI skin came out in 2010, and ever since, the company has released 14 different iterations of the Android-based user interface.

Although Digital Chat Station’s leak doesn’t mention MiOS, the purported successor to MIUI14, tipster Ice Universe posted a picture showcasing the “mios.cn” domain in August. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has also obtained the trademark for MiOS. It was then that reports about the company’s new operating system, with several improvements over MIUI, came out. However, it isn’t clear whether MiOS will debut as a self-developed operating system or will remain a skin based on Android, like MIUI.

Rebranding Could Help Xiaomi

MiOS could help the company provide users with a better software experience, whether it’s an Android-based operating system or a skin atop. In the past, several Xiaomi users have complained about seeing advertisements in the operating system. Xiaomi’s last stable software update for its users was MIUI14 in December 2022. It was based on Android 13, but it dropped support for smartphones running on Android 11.

Nevertheless, the smartphone manufacturer hasn’t released a stable software update since then, and with the yearly cycle approaching, there’s a good chance that the next stable update from the company could be the MiOS.
