Microsoft is about to release a Windows 11 feature that will unlock high-resolution upscaling to improve video game performance. The feature is already available on the Windows 11 24H2 beta version, or what Microsoft likes to call Insider build, which is available to a limited number of users.
How To Enable Windows 11 Auto SR Feature?
X (previously known as Twitter) user @PhantomOfEarth discovered the feature in Windows 11 version 24H2. The feature’s name is “Automatic super resolution.” Its description reads, “Use AI to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.” The user also mentions that people will get a switch to enable/disable the feature, along with per-app options. The feature is located in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
Windows 11 Auto SR To Benefit Video Games As Well As Regular Games
This would be the first time when Windows integrates an AI-based upscaling feature in place. Until now, graphic card manufacturers have offered this feature via AI upscaling technologies that help increase the effective frames per second a video game delivers. However, what’s different is that Windows 11 upscaling can also smoothen other apps, such as media players, web browsers, and older games that don’t support modern FSR or DLSS technology.
Auto SR Requirements
At the moment, the feature is available to machines with Nvidia RTX graphics cards. However, since it is compatible with NPUs, it should also work on Intel’s latest Core Ultra processors. Microsoft should release the Windows 11 24H2 update in the second half of this year. Apart from AI upscaling, the upcoming update will also bring other features, including several on-device AI capabilities.
