WhatsApp will allow 32 user realtime voice chats, similar to Clubhouse and Twitter voices

WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature called voice chats for groups. According to WABetaInfo, the messaging social media platform owned by Meta is testing voice chats, previously referred to as audio chats, in the WhatsApp beta update for Android 2.23.16.19. Although the testing happened some time back as well but no solid information was available at that time. The ‘voice chats for groups’ does sound like the existing voice call or voice notes features. However, there's a significant difference. Let’s find out.

This new beta update introduces a new voice waveform icon to WhatsApp groups. This icon can be used to start a voice chat and signals the presence of an ongoing voice conversation. When you tap on this option, an interface for voice chats will appear, from where you can join the audio conversations with others.

However both the features; Voice Chats for Groups and Voice call are similar because you need to speak using any of them, instead of chatting. But the difference between this new feature and voice call is that it won’t ring your smartphone. When the conversation starts in a group, it will send you a notification. So you can either join it and chat with other active people or just ignore it.

In order to join the voice chat, you need to enter the conversation in under one hour. After 60 minutes, you won’t be able to join. A total of 32 members can join the voice chat at once, although the exact number remains variable and could differ upon the official release of the feature.

As of now, we are not sure yet how this new feature will be different and maybe even better than the existing voice calls. To confirm that, we'll need to wait until it rolls out globally. WhatsApp frequently tests features and integrates them into the platform, and the same is expected for voice chats. 

Will this feature be the same as Twitter’s Spaces ? Well, right now, it seems like it is but the final version of Voice Chat for Groups might differ. So stay tuned for more information on this one.
