WhatsApp Passkeys Spotted In Beta Update For Android

1 year ago 54

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that lets users access their accounts with the help of biometrics or screen lock. The feature is available on the latest beta update for Android users, but at the moment, only a handful of users seem to have access. Here’s everything we know about the WhatsApp Passkeys feature, what it does, and how it can benefit users.

What is WhatsApp Passkeys?

According to WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is rolling out a new update through the Google Play Beta Program, version 2.23.20.4. Although the update is available to a limited number of testers, it has a new feature that could be useful for everyone. The WhatsApp beta update contains a new Passkey feature, which helps users verify their accounts.

Per a screenshot shared by the publication, WhatsApp Passkeys enables users to sign in safely by verifying their identity using their fingerprint, face, or screen lock. Although the feature looks like it’s for those using one WhatsApp account on multiple devices, in which case it could be of great help, the WABetaInfo report mentions that it is primarily for users who face issues logging into their accounts.

Regarding the passkey, WhatsApp stores it in a password manager, allowing users easy access. However, whether this raises concerns about a breach through the password manager is something we’ll discover when the feature will be widely available. With Passkeys, the messaging platform aims to provide a safer and more convenient experience for users accessing their accounts.

Beta users can check whether their WhatsApp account has access to the Passkeys feature by heading over to Settings > Account and looking for the Passkeys option. That said, there’s a good chance that WhatsApp will release Passkeys for all users soon.
