What is Grogu, Googles AirTag competitor

1 year ago 68

Apple’s AirTag changed the personal tracker market by offering a simple solution for people who want to keep track of items like keys, wallets, smartphones, luggage, handbags and more. Now, it seems that Google is working on a product that will be the direct competitor to Apple’s AIrTags. The offering is reportedly nicknamed Grogu.

What do we know about Google’s Grogu so far?

According to Kuba Wojciechowski, who is a known leakster in this space, Google’s Grogu will be similar in functionality to Apple’s AirTags. It may come with a speaker, offer multiple colours, and may also offer support for Bluetooth LE and ultra-wideband (UWB). The product has been named Grogu because that is Baby Yoda’s real name in The Mandalorian.

Google has equipped the Pixel smartphones with UWB technology since the Pixel 6 series, however, we have not really seen the company do anything specific with it yet. Perhaps the intention behind using the technology is to eventually make it compatible with the upcoming tracker so that users can get super-specific location data for their items.

When will Google’s Grogu launch?

At this point, the leakster has not revealed any information regarding the launch timelines for Google’s Grogu. The real name of the product is also under wraps. Many believe that the tracker may be announced during Google I/O in the spring of this year, with an eventual launch in October during the company’s annual hardware event. This is something we’ll know as we get closer to Google I/O.
