Three Things We Like About The Samsung Galaxy M55 5G (And Three Things We Wish Were Better)

Today, Samsung India launched the Galaxy M55 5G, a capable mid-range smartphone. It has a large Super AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon processor, and a triple camera setup. While we like these features, there are a few things we believe could have been better (or the competition is doing better). Let’s discuss all the points in detail.

Samsung Galaxy M55 5G Comes With A Super AMOLED Screen

The first thing anyone would notice about the Galaxy M55 5G is its massive screen. For years, the M series models have stuck with large AMOLED screens that have improved with time. For instance, the Galaxy M51 (review) from 2020 featured a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and 420 nits peak brightness. Fast forward to 2024, the Galaxy M55 5G’s 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ screen now supports 120Hz refresh rate and 1000 nits of peak brightness. This should make it easier for users to view the on-screen content under direct sunlight.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC With Up To 12GB Of RAM

Under the hood, the Galaxy M55 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, a highly efficient mobile chipset, thanks to its 4nm semiconductor size. In terms of performance, the chipset shows a mid-range character in both Antutu 10 and Geekbench 6 benchmarking platforms, where it scores about 660K and 964/2761 points, respectively (via Nanoreview). The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC performs much better than the Dimensity 900 SoC on the M53 5G. Users can choose from up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, giving users more data storage flexibility. 

Users Get Four Years Of OS Upgrades

Out of the box, the Galaxy M55 5G runs on the Android 14-based One UI 6.1. What’s good is that Samsung has promised operating system upgrades for four years, implying that the phone will get new Android features till 2028. On top of that, the company will provide security updates for one additional year, i.e., till 2029. Hence, in terms of longevity, the Galaxy M55 5G is one of the few models that delivers.

Galaxy M55 5G Doesn’t Come With A 108MP Primary Camera

Unlike the Galaxy M53 5G, which shipped with a 108MP (f/1.8) primary camera, the Galaxy M55 5G has a 50MP (f/1.8) primary sensor. Yes, it includes some AI-based features like the Image Clipper and Object Eraser, but still, that’s a strange downgrade to make, particularly when the company is refreshing a model after two years. The other two cameras on the new handset include an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2MP macro shooter. On the brighter side, the front camera gets upgraded from 32MP on the Galaxy M53 5G to 50MP (f/2.4) on the Galaxy M55 5G.

Slower Charging As Compared To The Competition

Given the Galaxy M55 5G’s pricing, it competes directly with models like the OnePlus Nord CE 4 5G and the Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G. The former has a 5,500 mAh battery that supports 100W wired charging, while the latter has a 5,100 mAh battery that supports 67W wired charging. In comparison, the Galaxy M55 5G’s 5,000 mAh battery supports a maximum charging speed of 45W. We’re not saying that 45W wired charging is exceptionally slow – it’s just that the competition has raised the bar slightly higher. 

Can You Get Better Smartphones At Galaxy M55 5G’s Price?

That depends on what the word “better” means for you. The smartphone’s base variant, with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costs Rs. 26,999. Then there’s a mid-tier model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, priced at Rs. 29,999. On the other hand, the top variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage costs Rs. 32,999. 

However, the top model of the OnePlus Nord CE 4 5G, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, costs Rs. 26,999. At a lower price, the smartphone offers better raw performance and faster charging. The downside with the phone is that OnePlus promises a mere two years of operating system and three years of security updates, less than that of the Galaxy M55 5G.

Those wanting a stock Android experience could go with the Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s 8/256GB model, which costs Rs. 31,999. However, it has a smaller battery than the Galaxy M55 5G. 

What’s weird is that the Galaxy M55 5G’s price is too similar to that of the Galaxy S21 FE 5G (review) with a Snapdragon 888 processor. The latter comes with flagship-tier cameras, including a telephoto sensor. Ultimately, it comes down to your preference, as all the models have pros and cons.
