Google AI Photo Editing features

With the Pixel 7 series (2022), Google unveiled some AI-based photo editing features, such as the Magic Eraser and the Photo Unblur. After being Pixel-exclusive for over a year, these features will be available to all Android and iOS users of the Google Photos app. Further, the limited availability of Magic Editor, which we reported yesterday, has also come true after an announcement from Google’s executive.

Google Photos Features To Be Available For Free In May 2024

As mentioned in a blog post by Dina Berrada, Director of Product Management at Google Photos, some AI-powered editing tools “will be available to anyone” using the app. Starting May 15, 2024, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light will be available for all Google Photos users across Android and iOS ecosystems. Importantly, these features will be available at no additional cost. This is a significant change as previously, non-Pixel users had to pay for the Basic Google One subscription plan to access them, but not anymore.

Magic Editor To Be Available On All Android And iOS Devices With Google Photos

Last year, Google released the Magic Editor with the Pixel 8 series. Using generative AI, the feature made it easier to do complex edits with simple actions, such as repositioning the subject of a picture or turning the sky from gray to blue. The feature works pretty well on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and to make things even better, Google is rolling out Magic Editor to all Pixel devices. In addition, all Google Photos users on Android and iOS can now edit and save 10 images per month. To go beyond this, they would need a Pixel device or a Premium Google One subscription (2TB and above).

What Can Users Do With The New Features?

  • Magic Eraser: This tool is located in Google Photos > Edit > Tools. In a nutshell, the feature uses AI to recognize and remove unwanted objects from a picture. It replaces the empty space with contextually appropriate objects that blend in with the image.
  • Photo Unblur: This tool is located in Google Photos > Edit > Tools. It helps users improve sharpness and details in otherwise blurry images.
  • Portrait Lights: This tool is also located in Edit > Tools. It uses an AI model to balance out lighting in a picture. You can even control the light’s position and brightness to adjust its effect on the subject.
  • Magic Editor: This tool is located in Edit > Tools. It helps users perform complicated edits that would otherwise take a lot of time and effort on professional software by simply on-screen gestures.
