The All-New BMW R 1300 GS Breaks Cover: Lighter, More Potent, And Packed With Technology

11 months ago 60

BMW Motorrad, the esteemed German motorcycle manufacturer, has once more set a new standard in the realm of adventure touring motorcycle with the official introduction of the eagerly-awaited next-generation R 1300 GS. This latest model is poised to provide an even more exhilarating and cutting-edge riding encounter for adventure aficionados across the globe. Evolving from the illustrious R 80 G/S, which pioneered the touring enduro category more than four decades ago, the R 1300 GS boasts a multitude of pioneering features, state-of-the-art equipment, technological advancements, and enhanced comfort, elevating the world of adventure motorcycling to unprecedented heights.

Design

Beginning with its platform, the fresh G 1300 GS showcases a novel steel sheet-metal frame, as per the company’s claims, offering heightened stiffness in a more compact form. Simultaneously, the bolt-on subframe has undergone a transformation, transitioning into a shorter, slimmer, yet notably rigid die-cast aluminum unit.

BMW R 1300 GS Powertrain

Bolstered by this chassis is the enlarged boxer twin engine, now boasting a displacement of 1300cc, which has been engineered to be more compact compared to its predecessor. This powerplant boasts impressive performance figures, rated at 143.5 bhp at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, making it the most potent boxer engine ever to emerge from BMW. Featuring a larger bore and an extended stroke, along with enhanced valves and new cams incorporating BMW’s ShiftCam technology, the engine not only delivers increased fuel efficiency but also packs more torque under heavy loads while offering a smoother cruising experience.

Furthermore, the 6-speed gearbox has been repositioned under the crankshaft, contributing to a reduction in weight, a shorter transmission shaft, and a mass distribution that’s closer to the bike’s center of gravity. As a result, the motorcycle has shed an impressive 12 kilograms compared to the previous generation, further enhancing its overall performance and agility.

Features

The new R 1300 GS impressively combines advanced technology with safety and convenience enhancements. It boasts adaptive cruise control, an upgraded Dynamic ESA with ride height adjustment, and a feature-rich 6.5-inch TFT display offering connected features and information. Keyless ignition streamlines starting, while four standard riding modes (Rain, Road, Eco, and Enduro) adapt to diverse conditions. For further customization, riders can choose from three optional Pro modes (Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, and Enduro Pro), delivering a personalized and dynamic riding experience.

In terms of its cycling components, the new R 1300 GS features upgraded suspension, including a new EVO Telelever setup at the front and an EVO para lever setup at the rear. This design enhances rigidity, stability, and steering precision. Additionally, the optional Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) replaces the Dynamic ESA, providing dynamic damping and spring preload adjustments based on riding mode, road conditions, and riding style. DSA also offers an adaptive seat height feature for added convenience during slow riding and at a standstill.

BMW Motorrad is on the verge of unveiling the pricing details for the brand-new R 1300 GS, with its global market availability imminent. Indian enthusiasts can anticipate its launch in the country shortly after its international debut. In the Indian market, the R 1300 GS will enter into competition with formidable rivals such as the Honda Africa Twin and Triumph Tiger 1200.
