Sony PlayStation Gets Support for Passkeys: Here’s How to Use

There’s good news for Sony PlayStation gamers as they no longer need passwords to log in to their accounts thanks to ‘Passkeys’. Sony launched passkey support across Sony PS4 and PS5 giving users relief from the age-old practice of remembering their passwords and entering them to get access to their online accounts.

With the passkeys in the works, you won’t have to remember the passwords anymore. Neither can be stolen, forgotten, or reused on other devices. This is a step towards building a convenient and secure ecosystem for PlayStation gamers without worrying about their accounts getting hijacked or hacked.

What are Passkeys?

For those who might not know what passkeys are, let’s break it down for you. Usually, a password to your online account gives you access to it, right? Unlike needing to remember passwords, passkeys are a secure form of unlocking an account wherein they assign a cryptographic key (which is unique to your device and the website/app you want to access).

These crypto keys never leave your device, cannot be reused or stolen, and are unique to your laptop or phone and the website/app you are using. All this securely ties your account with a stronger passkey.

Whenever a user tries to access via passkey, the website/app issues a digital ‘challenge’ and based on verifying the passkey (both private and public) and its access to the particular account, you are granted access. Additionally, these passkeys can be anything from your biometric fingerprints, face recognition, or simply the passcode/PIN on your device that makes it difficult for cybercriminals to get hold of your accounts.

How To Setup Passkey on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4?

Let’s see how you can create passkeys on PS4 or PS5 since the feature is limited to these consoles at the time of writing this.

1. Visit Sony PlayStation Account Management and use your login credentials to sign into your PSN account.

2. Once you are in, head towards the ‘Security’ tab on the left sidebar.

3. Proceed to ‘Edit’ under ‘Sign In With Passkey’ and you should get a prompt to create a passkey.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions as it is to complete the process.

5. Once you are done, you should receive a confirmation on your phone and email address, and bingo, now you can access the passkey on the registered devices.

Note: Sony has mentioned signing up for a passkey would deactivate the current password so keep that in mind. You can always create a passkey on your phone before proceeding to the console or Mac. Note that your passkey is unique to the devices so if you create a passkey for Android, it won’t be recognized on the Mac and you will be asked to create separate passkeys.
