Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Roundup: Release Date, Cluster Configuration, Fabrication Technology, And More

6 months ago 42

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 engineering sample tested on Genshin Impact

Last year, in October, the California-based chip manufacturer Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Ever since, we’ve seen the chipset powering the top-tier flagships from various companies, including Samsung, OnePlus, iQoo, Xiaomi, and more. Now, at the Mobile World Congress 2024, the company’s CMO, Don McGuire, has confirmed the existence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, along with a release timeline and a key detail.

Qualcomm Confirms The Release Timeline For The Processor

McGuire has confirmed that Qualcomm will hold its annual Snapdragon Summit event in October 2024, where the company will reveal the next-generation flagship chipset for Android smartphones – Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. “There’s going to be some really cool stuff as our mobile platforms are reinvented with our Oryon CPU.” In a video on the microblogging platform X, the executive mentions that the upcoming SoC will feature a “supercharged” CPU and an improved NPU.

The Company Could Finalize Development In April

SD 8 Gen 4 news:

– 8 Gen 4 will be finalized in April. They will be shipped to OEMs by June, and will begin mass production in September, before the Snapdragon Summit in early October.
– Clock speed is 4GHz+, OC models are possible. Power consumption is still high at this stage.

Along with the official announcement from the company, a tipster seems to have revealed more information about the manufacturing timeline. As per @negativeonehero on X, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC will be finalized in April, indicating it’s still in development. The company might take another month (March) to figure out the best configuration. Once finalized, the chipsets will ship to OEMs or Qualcomm’s smartphone manufacturer partners by June for initial testing. Then, the chipset will enter mass production in September.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s Maximum Clock Speed And Cluster Configuration

Another rumor that’s doing rounds on the internet is that the processor will carry a clock speed of over 4GHz, with the possibility of overclocked versions. In the past, we’ve seen a slightly overclocked version of the Snapdragon processor on Samsung Galaxy devices. However, the tipster also notes that the power consumption remains high at this stage, which is probably why the company will take another month to finalize the design.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is also said to feature nearly twice as much AI and DSP computational power as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Further, the chipset could also feature Adreno 830 GPU, one of the most powerful GPUs on a smartphone. Regarding the cluster configuration, the upcoming processor could come with two prime and six high-power cores, eliminating the efficiency cores. Qualcomm is also rumored to rely on TSMC’s 3nm fabrication technology for manufacturing the 8 Gen 4, which should balance the power efficiency.

However, it is important to mention that none of these details, including the finalization timeline, maximum clock speed, and cluster configuration, are confirmed by Qualcomm. Hence, readers should take this information with a pinch of salt. Nonetheless, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s launch should be a pivotal point in the company’s life, as it will be one of the most advanced and power-efficient chipsets in the market.
