Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Samsung Galaxy Vs. Regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: What’s The Difference?

Every year, the California-based chip manufacturer Qualcomm releases a flagship chipset. Last year, it was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The processor powered flagship phones like the Galaxy S23, Fold 5, etc. However, these Samsung smartphones did not come out with the regular SoC. Instead, they featured the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, a slightly overclocked version of the standard processor, also known as the “Plus” variant for other phone makers.

Here’s What The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy Could Offer

In 2024, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S24 series. Per several reports and rumors, it should consist of three models: the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. While the non-Ultra models are said to come with Samsung’s in-house Exynos chipset, the S24 Ultra will chip with the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. While the chipset already offers a significant performance and efficiency improvement over Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Samsung’s collaboration with Qualcomm should result in another “Snapdragon for Galaxy” version.

Here’s How The Prime Cores On The Two Chipsets Compare

Unlike the regular version, which has a 3.3GHz primary Cortex X4 high-performance core, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy will feature a 3.4GHz Cortex X4 core. However, per a report, the other core clusters are slightly underclocked. While the vanilla 8 Gen 3 has five performance cores which can go up to 3.2GHz and two efficiency cores (up to 2.3GHz), the 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy could feature five cores with clock speeds up to 3.15GHz and two efficiency cores (up to 2.27GHz). The latter is also said to come with an overclocked GPU.

We believe this would help the processor maintain optimum temperature and efficiency while delivering slightly better peak performance, but one should wait for more details. In the past, Snapdragon’s Plus or “for Galaxy” versions featured overclocked cores, but none were underclocked. Nevertheless, the information is based on initial reports, and there’s a chance that the company could change the processor’s configuration before the launch, which should take place in two months.

Galaxy S24 Ultra Could Come With A Titanium Frame

In a related development, the Galaxy S24 Ultra could be the first Samsung smartphone to adopt a Titanium frame. The Titanium frame could cost the company four to five times the current material costs. For reference, the Galaxy S23’s aluminum frame cost the company under $20. Samsung is already in talks with several Chinese suppliers to develop the Titanium alloy it needs for S24 Ultra.

Further, the premium material could also increase the phone’s cost. If the reception on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is positive, the company might also ship other Galaxy models with a Titanium frame. Earlier this year, Apple released the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the first smartphones with a titanium frame.
