Samsung working on three new camera sensors; 440MP being the largest

Samsung 440MP Cam

Samsung unveiled its first-ever 200MP earlier this year with Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and it blew minds citing its monstrosity. However, it appears that the 200MP snapper might soon dwarf in front of Samsung’s 440MP camera that the South Korean giant is reportedly working on.

Samsung tipped to be working on new camera sensors

Tipster Revegnus posted about the various camera sensors that Samsung is working on. He took it to X (formerly Twitter) to post about the same.

440MP HU1: The first is its giant 440MP HU1 sensor. Although there’s no specs info available about this sensor, the company is working on it. The sensor is huge and it remains to be seen if Samsung will use it in smartphones or not or if it could be used for industrial and automotive use cases. The 440MP HU1 sensor could be in the direction of developing cameras with human eye equivalent resolution i.e. 500 to 600MP since Samsung claimed as such back in 2020.

320MP: If speculations are believed, we could get a 320MP sensor (currently unnamed) on Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra in early 2026. Currently, only MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC can handle up to 320MP whereas the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC maxes out at 200MP on the primary cams. Having a 320MP sensor on S26 Ultra seems to be quite legit although not confirmed or even inferred yet.

200MP HP7: The next tipped camera sensor in the works is the 200MP HP7 boosting a 0.7 micron pixel size and initially planned to roll out with the next-gen Galaxy S25 Ultra in 2025. It appears to be S23 Ultra’s 200MP HP2 sensor but with larger pixels onboard. It remains to be seen what the current status of the 200MP HP7 is.

50MP ISOCELL GN6: The tipster mentioned 50MP ISOCELL GN6, a potential successor to the 50MP ISOCELL GN1 and GN2 cameras. It will be the first 1-inch sensor to rival Sony 1-inch IMX989 sensors. However, it seems like Samsung won’t be pairing any of its devices with GN6, and rather Chinese smartphone makers will get to cherish it.

According to Revegnus, all three sensors i.e. 200MP HP7, 50MP GN6, and 440MP HU1 will enter their mass production phase in the second half of 2024. Neither of the trio might be used on any Samsung devices as per what we have understood till now.
