Samsung’s fleet of foldable phones has come a long way ever since the original Samsung Galaxy Fold made its debut with a disastrous turn of events. Today, both Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 are among the most resilient foldable phones in terms of the foldable display. It seems like Samsung wants to bolster trust and resiliency in its foldable devices even further as it has trademarked an internal display “Ironflex” slated to make its debut with Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 this year.
The trademark filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Services (KIPRIS) dated January 3 describes “Ironflex” as a “foldable OLED display panel” that can be used on foldable smartphones but also on foldable wearable video display monitors and foldable tablet computers.
Unfortunately, the trademark document falls short of giving the tidbits on what exactly the “Ironflex” foldable OLED panel does. However, the name that looks too marketing gimmicky, could be a reference to a better foldable display panel that can give an edge to the foldable display tech used today.
As said, Samsung had disastrous turn of events with the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. The displays on the review units began to break and the hinges weren’t able to keep the dirt off. Neither the display was able to resolve the ‘creases’ borne out of folding and unfolding the phone.
Today, the South Korean giant is at the forefront with one of the best foldable phones out there – the latest being Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5. With the “Ironflex” display tech making itself known recently, we could see the tech in the works as early as this year. The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are due this summer making them the contender to pick up “Ironflex” to its list of upgrades if not more.
