Samsung to use an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for its Galaxy S23 models

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip has been announced and right off the bat, it seems like a major step up from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, even though it is based on a similar 4nm node. The new chip is not only more power efficient but it also promises notable raw performance improvements over the last gen chip. Most flagship Android phones are expected to flaunt this chipset and it seems as if Samsung wants the better ones for its Galaxy S series devices.

Based on a couple of new leaks, it seems that Samsung wants to secure the higher clocked versions of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip for its Galaxy S23 series devices. Some early Geekbench results have shown that the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra will have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a prime performance core clocked at 3.36GHz. That is fast by all means.

Samsung to get faster Snapdragon?

Meanwhile, the values listed by Qualcomm at its launch event confirmed the prime core to run at 3.19GHz. That should make the Samsung version of the chip much more powerful than the one used by the rest of phone makers. A higher clockspeed could help Samsung achieve faster app loading times, or contribute to some special features of the Galaxy S23 series.

Not only that, a new tip from Ice Universe now says that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will also have a faster GPU for the Galaxy S23 series. The GPU will have a clockspeed frequency of 719MHz, which is faster than the standard chip's 680MHz. Hence, you can expect the Galaxy S23 series to be a better choice for gamers and vloggers.

A special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for these phones means that Samsung may not use an Exynos chip for the Galaxy S23 series across the world. The Galaxy S22 series with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip has displayed great performance benefits over the Exynos 2200 version. This is despite the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 being inefficient at thermal management.

The Galaxy S23 series is expected to bring updated design for the standard models, and the Ultra version will carry on with the same look, albeit with minor refinements.
