Samsung’s latest foldable device – the Galaxy Z Fold5 5G, is the epitome of foldable smartphones. It has been tested to withstand lacs of times of folding and unfolding without any issues. Well, the 7” OLED panel just received an American ‘Military Specifications’ (MilSpec) recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense. In simple words, the display has received MIL-STD 810G standard capable of withstanding extreme shocks, drops, temperatures, and water. Here’s more about the story.

Samsung Display’s 7-inch OLED foldable panel (fitted on the Galaxy Z Fold5 5G), got its MIL-STD 810G certification as tested by a global applied safety science institute – UL Solutions.

The display was tested under normal conditions with no issues. It was tested by freezing the exterior panel under a 6mm thick ice in a -10° C environment for four hours and it withstood it.

Another temperature-related test endured the phone under fluctuating temperatures between +63° C to -32° C for four hours in a row. It was further subjected to repeated sudden temperature changes over 12 hours (three times in total) and the phone made it with flying colors.

Next up, the phone underwent a series of 26 experiments including people falling from 1.22m while using the phone and in different directions that could mimic real use cases. However, the foldable display managed to remain unscratched even after going through these experiments. The display was tested with 10.5 times the force of gravity and it still managed to perform well.

Samsung Display says that Galaxy Z Fold5’s foldable panel uses 1,800 foldable patents registered with the U.S. which is four times that of any major global rivals. Adding a military spec certification gives the OLED display an edge over in the foldable display market.
