Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Won’t Feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC? Here’s What We Know

For the last few years, Samsung has relied on Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line processors for its foldable smartphones. For instance, the Flip 4 (review) and Fold 4 series from 2022 featured the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, while the latest Flip 5 (review) and Fold 5 (review) series comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. However, this trend could change, as a tipster suggests the presence of an Exynos chipset on the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Tipster “Won’t Be Surprised” If Exynos Is Included In This Year’s Flip 6

According to tipster @Tech_Reve, Samsung could ship the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with its Exynos 2400 SoC. For those catching up, this is the same processor that powered the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus in several regions, including India. While it makes more business sense for the company, it might be disappointing for users aware of the differences between the Exynos 2400 SoC and Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

Samsung Exynos 2400 Vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: CPU Cores, GPU, And Benchmark Scores

On paper, the Exynos 2400 SOC features 10 cores, including one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.21GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.9GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 2GHz. In terms of graphics, Samsung’s in-house chipset features Xclipse 940 graphics, clocked at 1.09GHz.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 comes with an octa-core design, featuring one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.3GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3.15GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.96GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 2.26GHz. While the prime core on the 8 Gen 3 is faster than that of the Exynos 2400 SoC, the 770MHz Adreno 750 has a lesser clock speed.

Even so, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is able to score over two million points on Antutu, whereas Exynos tops at around 1.8 million points. On Geekbench 6, both processors score a similar single-core score, but the 8 Gen 3 scores marginally higher when compared to the Exynos 2400 SoC. Hence, in terms of performance, Samsung’s latest flagship chipset is as good, if not better, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

Samsung Might Have To Make A Few Changes To Get Rid Of The Potential Heating Issues

According to an article from bgr.com, “the Exynos 2400 gets hotter, the battery is worse, and you might experience cellular connectivity and photo quality issues.” However, the publication also mentions that the processor isn’t as bad as the Exynos 2200 on the Galaxy S22 series, and Samsung has significantly improved heat management. Another report by SamInsider mentions that the Exynos 2400 SoC throttles in areas with higher ambient temperatures.

Given that there seems to be a bit to work on in the heat dissipation area and the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s limited internal spacing, it might not be the best combination. However, we expect Samsung to make relevant improvements, especially if the rumor is true. On the company’s part, equipping the smartphone with its chipset should reduce the overall cost and help optimize apps and the operating system better. Nonetheless, it is important to mention that the Exynos 2400 SoC remains a rumor.
