Apple rolled out the Car Crash Detection feature with the iPhone 14 series and it has since saved hundreds of lives following disastrous car crashes and accidents. Google Pixel 4 series and above have these features as well, however, we didn’t get it on the latest Samsung Galaxy S24 series even though they are top-of-the-line. But it seems like Samsung is cooking something in the background that brings car crash detection onboard the S24 series.
According to Mishaal Rehman of Android Police, he came across a ‘Car Crash Detection Wakeup Sensor’ within the Tasker app when he was beating around to find settings to make Gboard a default over Samsung Keyboard. The feature is controlled by a hidden system app called MoccaMobile accessible on OneUI 6.1 but no UI is present at the moment.
When digging, Mishaal found Galaxy S23 Ultra has MoccaMobile with a UI running OneUI 6.0 build, however, there’s no presence of a car crash detection feature onboard. The Galaxy Z Fold5 running OneUI 5.1.1 has a similar app present too while Galaxy S22 Ultra running OneUI 5.0 has no reference.
It begs the question if the latest Galaxy S24 series (at least the S24 Ultra) and Galaxy Z Fold5 will bring a car crash detection feature onboard or not.
Technically speaking, almost every Android phone has the sensors required to detect such occasions. It uses a gyroscope, accelerometer, microphone, and location which is relayed to a system that processes the data and deduces if an accident has happened or not. If yes, it can automatically trigger a connection to emergency services and/or emergency contacts that are already available on the phone to alert you about your whereabouts in case you are unable to make the call yourself.
However, this process is very power-intensive and would require lower battery life and thus, often a feature smartphone makers avoid enabling on their phones. Samsung’s MoccaMobile will be able to handle this process and will be responsible for starting and stopping the crash detection sensor hinting at battery-saving measures.
It remains to be seen when and how Samsung will roll out one of the must-have features on flagship phones especially when the competitors already have an edge in terms of years of data to predict instances of accidents and take necessary remedial actions.
