Sam Altman To Return As OpenAI’s CEO, Microsoft Remans Committed To Its Partnership

OpenAI has been on a rollercoaster ride. First, they fired Sam Altman, stating that he was not candid in his communications, appointing Mira Murati as the interim CEO. Then, pressured by investors and the employees, they tried to reinstate Altman but denied the changes he demanded, which led to an impasse. The company then elected its third CEO, Emmett Shear, who demanded an investigation into what went wrong and why Altman was fired in the first place; meanwhile, Altman joined Microsoft. Finally, today, OpenAI has confirmed the return of Sam Altman.

OpenAI Announces Sam’s Return As CEO

On November 22, 2023, OpenAI said through its official X (formerly known as Twitter) that the company has agreed in principle for Sam Altman to return as the CEO. Further, OpenAI has also decided to remove the previous board, which wasn’t competent enough to run the company as per the letter signed by employees. Sam will return to the company under a new board, consisting of Bret Taylor as the chairman, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.

Responding to this tweet, Greg Brockman, the former chair of OpenAI’s board, wrote, “We will come back stronger & more unified than ever.” Altman himself took to his X account, sharing how he loves the. “With the new board and w Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI, and building on our strong partnership with msft [Microsoft],” added Altman.

Satya Nadella Remains Committed To Microsoft’s Partnership With OpenAI

Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, also took to his account that the change will lead the company to a more stable, well-informed, and better governance. In other words, Nadella doesn’t seem to have a problem with Altman, Brockman, and the team leaving the company to return to their original position. Moreover, Microsoft will benefit from OpenAI’s progress, so it’s a win-win situation for the company whether Altman stays or leaves his role as the CEO of OpenAI.

Meanwhile, OpenAI’s interim CEO, Emmett Shear, also took to his X account, saying that the solution took 72 hours of intense work. Shear believes that bringing back Altman and creating a new board is the right pathway for the company, and it should “maximize safety” alongside “doing right by all stakeholders involved.”

The New Board Will Appoint More People Soon

According to a report by The Verge, the new board will appoint a new board with up to nine people that will “reset the governance of OpenAI.” Further, Microsoft, being the largest investor in the company, also wants to have a seat on the board to be a part of all the decisions.
