Reliance JioSpaceFiber demonstrated in India

The Indian telecommunication service provider, Reliance Jio, has demonstrated the country’s first satellite-based broadband service. With JioSpaceFiber, the company aims to provide high-speed internet to remote areas in challenging geographies. Jio showcased the new technology at the India Mobile Congress on Friday, October 27, 2023.

JioSpaceFiber Will Provide Low-Latency Internet To Remote Locations

Reliance Jio already has two broadband services available in various parts of the country – JioFiber and JioAirFiber. With the new JioSpaceFiber, Reliance wants to provide reliable, low latency, and highspeed internet that allows them to access entertainment and other internet-based services, regardless of the location.

Reliance Partners With SES For Satellites

To provide satellite connectivity, Reliance is partnering with SES for its satellites in medium earth orbit (MEO), which, per the company, is the only MEO constellation capable of delivering truly Gigabit, broadband-like services from space. For this, SES will give access to its O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites. Demonstrating the solution’s effectiveness, Jio has already connected four of the remotest locations in the country, including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odissa, and Jorhat in Assam.

Although the company hasn’t revealed the prices yet, it is touting that the JioSpaceFiber would be affordable, like its other broadband services. For all intents and purposes, JioSpaceFiber is the Indian version of Starlink, the satellite broadband service by Elon Musk-led SpaceX. Starlink quietly launched their satellite-based internet in India, but they had to retract because of the government intervention.
