Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 SoC For Mid-Tier Smartphones

Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 SoC

The California-based chip manufacturer Qualcomm has announced a new chipset, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. It comes as an addition to the Snapdragon 7 series of processors made for mid-range Android smartphones. In the past, Qualcomm has released a few processors in the lineup, including the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and the more capable Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2. However, the 7s Gen 2 seems to be a downgrade from these chipsets.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 Specifications

Per Qualcomm, the latest chipset is based on 4nm fabrication technology. It is an eight-core processor with four cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 1.95GHz. The company doesn’t specify the names of the cores, though. Further, it says that an Adreno chipset accompanies the chipset. It is important to mention that other mid-range processors often shy away from including four high-frequency cores, which gives Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 an edge over other chipsets in the segment.

The processor features the Snapdragon X62 5G modem, which, at first look, looks similar to that of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2. However, the download speed is limited to 2.9Gbps on 7s Gen 2. Other key specifications of the processor include support for a 48MP single camera, 32MP + 16MP dual camera setup, or a 16MP triple camera setup. Smartphones based on the chip can record 4K videos at 30 fps, 4K HDR videos, and 120fps slow-motion videos.

Other chipset features include support for FHD+ displays with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz, Bluetooth v5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, and Quick Charge 4+ technology for faster charging. That said, we’ll see the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 debut with the Redmi Note 13 Pro, scheduled to launch in China this month. Although the chipset doesn’t offer much RAW performance, it should still be a reasonable upgrade for mid-tier smartphones.
