Qi2 wireless chargers confirmed to debut this holiday season

10 months ago 55

Qi2 (pronounced ‘chee two’) is the latest wireless charging standard from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and it was announced back in the early days of 2023. We haven’t heard much since then, but the WPC has now issued an official press release that confirms that the first batch of Qi2 chargers are now completing their certification testing and will make their way to consumers in time for the holiday period.

Qi2 wireless chargers confirmed to debut this holiday season

Qi2 comes in two profiles with the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) based on Apple’s MagSafe technology which Cupertino contributed to the WPC and offering up to 15W charging speeds and magnetic attachment. The second is an enhanced version of the Extended Power Profile (EPP) which forgoes the magnetic attachment but still supports Qi2 devices and offers double the charging speed at 30W.

We are thrilled to see our members rapidly embracing Qi v2.0 and building ecosystems of accessories for Qi2 devices. We fully expect to see Qi v2.0 quickly become the de facto global standard for wireless charging. - Fady Mishriki, chair of WPC’s Board of Directors

The key selling point with Qi2 chargers is their ability to magnetically attach to both iOS and Android devices as well as wireless accessories like earbuds cases and smartwatches. The WPC press release confirmed that the iPhone 15 series will be among the first devices to benefit from the new standard with accessory makers like Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge already testing their Qi2 products which are due to launch soon.
