PS5 Pro Rumors Roundup: Specifications, Features, Price, And Expected Release Date

PlayStation 5 Cricket 24 bundle released in India

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is one of the most popular gaming consoles ever. First released in November 2020, the PS5 was initially available in the country via a limited sales drop that came once in a few months. However, now, the console is readily available on the company’s website, as well as other leading retailers, such as Amazon, Flipkart, Croma, etc. Chronologically, a Sony PS6 should take over the current generation gaming console from the company. However, for months, there have been rumors about a Sony PS5 Pro, a powered-up version of the PS5 that’s currently available. Most recently, a report by CNBC stated that Sony could release the rumored PS5 Pro in 2024. That said, let’s find out more details about the purported gaming console when it could arrive, and what kind of features it will offer.

PS5 Pro Expected Release Date

Although there’s no rumored launch date for the Sony PS5 Pro, other factors suggest an imminent launch. In 2013, the company released the vanilla PS4. However, when the hype around the console dropped in a few years, Sony released the PS4 Pro with slightly better hardware. So, this is not the first time the company has worked on a Pro version. Regarding the release timeline, the PS4 Pro came out in 2016, i.e., three years from the PS4. Given that it has already been over three years since PS5 hit the market, there’s a good chance that Sony will release the new PS5 Pro soon, possibly in the second half of 2024.

Interestingly, folks at IGN have found out that Microsoft isn’t expecting Sony to launch a next-generation PlayStation (it could be the PS6) until 2028, courtesy of legal documents related to the Microsoft vs. FTC case. Hence, considering the drop in sales, it only makes sense for the Japanese entertainment giant to drop an updated, more powerful gaming console that gets things going until the PS6 finally arrives.

PS5 Pro Expected Improvements

Essentially, the PS5 Pro will build upon the foundation set by the PS5, which can run 4K games at 120 frames per second (for selective titles). The current generation console also supports features like ray tracking, 3D audio, and immersive haptic feedback via the DualSense wireless controller, which is already pretty great. However, the PS5 Pro could improve the overall gaming experience with tiny yet meaningful improvements.

For instance, instead of supporting 4K for some titles, PS5 Pro could increase the resolution to 8K. This should also benefit the company’s 8K television sets, as people might purchase them to take full advantage of PS5 Pro’s capabilities. The improvement in graphics should stem from the rumored 2.7GHz GPU, a significant improvement over the 2.2GHz GPU on the regular PS5. Further, the total computer power of the PS5 Pro could be around 33.5 teraflops (single-precision computer power), which is a huge bump over the PS5.

Another rumor suggests the presence of a new Ryzen APU on the gaming console, which might even include an NPU or a Neural Processing Unit. Yes, that indicates the presence of some AI-based features on the console, including, but not limited to, upscaling and frame interpolation. Further, the console could arrive with a slightly better CPU clock speed, but it might not get updated to the latest Zen 4 CPU standard. Hence, to sum up, we expect a new CPU, GPU, and NPU to handle the AI-based tasks and a performance mode that could boost the resolution to 8K in supported titles.

PS5 Pro Expected Price

Assuming Sony follows the same strategy it did with the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro could launch at the same price as the PS5, i.e., $499. However, given that the company recently increased its prices citing global inflation, there’s a good chance that PS5 Pro could launch at around $100 more than the regular version.
