The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) is a housing initiative launched by the GOI in 2015 to provide affordable housing to all citizens by 2022. The scheme targets the shortage of affordable housing in the country, in urban as well as rural areas, by offering financial assistance to those who cannot afford to pay for their homes. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) is a government of India initiative that was launched in 2015 to ensure housing to all citizens of India by 2022. It aims to address the shortage of affordable housing in India, especially in urban areas by providing financial assistance to those who cannot afford to buy a home.

Key Highlights of PMAY

  • Its main aim is to provide affordable housing options to all citizens of India by 2022, the 75th year of Independence.
  • The program targets economically weaker sections, lower-income groups, and middle-income groups throughout India.
  • Those eligible can receive subsidies on home loans, direct financial assistance for building houses, in-situ rehabilitation of slum dwellers, and credit-linked subsidies for middle-income groups.

2 Main Types of PMAY

The scheme has been divided into 2 parts-

(A) PMAY-G (For rural areas)– Earlier known as the Indira Awas Yojna, PMAY-G was renamed in 2016. As the name suggests, it focuses on providing affordable and accessible housing units to eligible people in rural India (excluding Chandigarh and Delhi). The State as well as Central Government share costs with a 40:60 ratio for plain regions and a 10:90 ratio for North-Eastern and Hilly areas.

(B) PMAY-U (For Urban Areas)– It focuses on urban areas in India and includes 4331 towns and cities. It has been implemented in 3 stages. The first stage being April 2015 to March 2017 under which the government aimed to cover 100 cities across different states and UTs. 2nd stage was from April 2017 to March 2019 when 200 more cities and UTs were added. The final stage covers the remaining cities that were not included in stages 1 and 2.

Eligibility Criteria for PMAY

  • The applicant must be a citizen of India.
  • The applicant must not own a permanent house in their name or the name of any family member in any part of India.
  • A woman’s name must appear on the deed or property papers, either as a sole proprietor or joint owner. If there are no females in the family, this can be waived.
  • Home loans for renovation or extension of an existing property must be completed within 36 months from receiving the first loan installment.
  • The applicant’s annual income must not exceed INR 3 lakh per year for the economically weaker section, INR 3-6 Lakh for lower income group, INR 6 lakh to 12 lakh for Middle-income group, and INR 12 to 18 lakh for the Middle-income group (category 2).
  • The applicant must not have received any housing benefits from a government scheme.
  • He/she must be the head of the household and not over 60 years of age.

Applying for PMAY Online

  • Visit the official PMAY website and click on the “Citizen Assessment” option under the Menu tab.
  • Key in your Aadhaar Number.
  • Fill out the application form with all the necessary details.
  • Recheck the information before submitting the form.
  • On submitting, you will get a unique application number. Store it for future use.
  • Download the filled-in application form.
  • Submit the form along with the required documents at a nearby CSC office or financial institution offering PMAY.

Applying for PMAY Offline

Eligible candidates can obtain and fill out forms in this regard available at common service centers (CSCs). They have to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 25 plus GST on the purchase of the PMAY subsidy form. CSCs are the access point to avail of essential public utility services in rural parts of India.

Checking the Status of the PMAY Application

1. Using Aadhaar Card

  • Go to the PMAY website page
  • Click on the Aadhaar Card. Enter the Aadhaar number in the given box. Enter the Aadhaar number of the person whose name you have applied for PMAY.
  • Fill in the name as per Aadhaar.
  • Tick the box to indicate that you agree to share Aadhaar details for authentication.
  • Press on check.

2. Using Name, Father’s Name & Mobile Number

  • Go to the PMAY website page.
  • Click on the first option, i.e. by name, father’s name, and mobile number.
  • Key in the details.
  • Submit and you will see the status of the application.

3. Using Assessment ID

  • Visit the PMAY website page
  • Click on the 2nd option, by assessment ID.
  • Enter and submit it to see the status.

4. Using the CLSS tracker

  • Go to the PMAY website page
  • On the home page, there is a section to enter the application ID. Enter it and click on get status.
  • You will get an OTP and your mobile, Enter the OTP on the screen.
  • You will be shown status.
