The Nothing Phone (1) was one of the most well-received phones of 2022 and now its successor Nothing Phone (2) has been launched in the country. The 2nd generation Nothing smartphone has received upgrades not only in terms of specs but also a new glyph interface. The “Glyph Interface” is one of the highlights of Nothing Phone (2) as it comes with more functionalities this time.
What does Nothing Phone (2) Glyph interface look like?
Nothing has revamped the glyph interface along the back side with 11 separate LED strips. The new glyph interface is using more LED lights to help communicate details about the phone without relying on the screen. There is a pattern of LEDs on the rear of the phone with 33 separate zones, allowing more customizations and some clever functions that can be displayed on the rear of the phone via a receding line. The LEDs have tripled from 12 to 33 and the LED strips are more symmetrical now.
Nothing Phone (2)’s glyph interface allows some cool functions. Have a look at them below.
1. Glyph is now a volume-level indicator
The Nothing Phone (2) has more LEDs on the back and this time the glyph interface on the back will act as a volume level indicator. If your Nothing Phone (2) is lying face down, you just have to press the volume button and one of the LEDs will light up to show you what volume level the device is currently at.
2. Glyph can set and view Timers
A timer functionality has also been built into the Nothing Phone (2) glyph interface menu. You can set a timer in the same way you normally would on your phone, and then flip the phone face down to start it. The glyph lights will activate once the countdown ends. The LEDs in the glyph interface are being used as a countdown timer so one doesn’t have to keep looking at the screen. The right-side glyph LED strip will turn on and slowly start fading with each passing second.
3. Glyph interface for 3rd party apps
Nothing has plans to let the food delivery and ride-sharing apps use a glyph interface to show how much time is left for your order to arrive or ride to reach the destination. Currently, Nothing has a partnership with Uber where the glyph interface works as a progress tracker for your upcoming ride. You can see the glyph light indicating the driver’s arrival at your location. Nothing confirmed a partnership with Zomato as well.
4. Glyph interface showing essential notifications
Notifications are distracting when you are working or trying to relax. With Nothing Phone (2) one can set the glyph interface such that it lights up only when you receive notifications from a certain app that is actually important to you. There are no RGB lights so different color lights can’t be assigned to different apps.
When whitelisted contacts or apps send you a notification, the interface lights up and keeps shining until you check the notification. One can enable the Flip to Glyph feature to get light-only notifications whenever you place the phone face down.
5. Creating Glyph based Ringtones
A glyph composer has been added to new functionalities, with which you can create your own ringtones using different light and sound combinations. Just open the glyph composer and you will find 5 different pads, each triggering a different glyph interface light and sound combination. And when you are ready, hit the record button and let your creativity flow. There is a sound pack from the EDM act Swedish House Mafia for making compositions better.
This feature is meant for those who are quirky and want to create something on their own.
6. Glyph interface as a torch
The Glyph interface on Nothing Phone (2) acts as an actual torch. Open the notification center on the Nothing Phone (2) and long press the Torch tile, and you will see that the glyph interface will light up instead of the camera flash.
Some other Glyph Interface Features similar to Nothing Phone (1)
Similar to its predecessor Nothing Phone (1), the glyph LED strip at the bottom acts as a charging indicator. Every time you plug in your phone and give it a little shake, the bottom glyph LED strip shows a visual representation of the battery level. This strip will light up when you activate Google Assistant from Lockscreen.
All in all, Nothing has tried to add to the utility of the Glyph interface and it seems like the company will do so with every new model. The aim is to make the glyph interface less gimmicky and more useful.
