Mi TV 4A 40 Horizon Edition vs OnePlus TV 40Y1: Specs and features compared

If you are in the market to pick up a 40-inch full HD TV, then there are new contenders for you to consider. Both Xiaomi and OnePlus recently launched their 40-inch TV offerings in the form of the Mi TV 4A 40 Horizon Edition and the OnePlus TV 40Y1. Both are Full HD TVs running on the Android TV platform and both offer an interesting set of features and specifications. While we haven't reviewed either of the TVs, here is a look at how they compare in terms of features and specifications. 

Display

When it comes to the display, both the TVs have an FHD display and do not support HDR. The lack of HDR support is a good thing as we have seen past FHD TVs offer a lacklustre HDR performance. Both the panels have a 1080p resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz. There is no information online whether they are using an IPS or VA panel. If you are looking for a 1080p TV for set-top-box content consumption or OTT content or even gaming, then the specs on offer on this display look like they can get the job done.  

Audio

Once again, when it comes to audio, both the TVs offer 20W of sound output. While the specifications of Audio may be the same on paper, their performance in audio output may vary based on the tuning of the TVs speakers. Needless to say, we think both TVs should get the job done for everyday TV viewing. 

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, each TV has its own advantages. While the Mi TV 4A 40 Horizon Edition has two USB ports, one ethernet port, one mini-AV port, three HDMI ports with support for ARC, headphones out, and an optical port. The TV also supports Bluetooth 4.2 and only the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi band. The OnePlus TV 40Y1 on the other hand has two HDMI ports, two USB ports, an ethernet port, an antenna port, an AV port and an optical port. It has Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi. 

Both the TVs do not support the 5Ghz Wi-Fi band and that's ok. The OnePlus TV has the advantage with the Bluetooth 5.0 Standard. The Mi TV on the other hand has an additional HDMI port with support for HDMI ARC which the OnePlus TV lacks. 

OS and UI

Both the TVs run on Android TV out of the box. The Android TV UI is homogenous across TVs offering a simple UI. Both the TVs support Chromecast built-in along with the Google Assistant. Both TVs come with voice-enabled remote controls. However, both TVs bring their own UI to the TV as well. The Mi TV has Xiaomi’s PatchWall UI while OnePlus has OxygenPlay. 

Both the UI’s have the same purpose, to integrate content providers into the UI. In this regard, PatchWall has better service integration than OxygenPlay. Where the OnePlus Y1 differentiates itself is with the app to control the TV. You can take screenshots of the TV from the phone, switch the apps on the TV and the volume of the TV automatically goes down when you get a call. So, each TV gives you the comfort of the Android TV UI and adds a little special sauce of their own. The UI is more of a personal choice so go with the one that suits your needs better.    

Design and Build

Both the TVs offer a simple and elegant design with slim borders on three sides of the TV. Both the TVs are held in place with two simple feet and can be wall-mounted as well. The design is something we’ve seen on multiple TVs in the past. 

Remote control

Both the TVs come with a minimalistic remote control giving you hotkeys to navigate OTT platforms. Both TVs offer volume controls, a google assistant button and navigation. The OnePlus remote control has a dedicated mute button, users can double-tap the volume down button to mute the Mi TV.  

Price and Conclusion

Both the OnePlus 40 Y1 and the Xiaomi Mi 4A 40 Horizon Edition are priced at Rs 23,999. While the OnePlus 40Y1 launched at Rs 21,999, as of writing this story the price on Flipkart and the OnePlus website reflects Rs 23,999. While both the TVs seem homogenous in terms of features and specifications, the one place where the Mi TV has an advantage is with connectivity. Not only does it have an extra HDMI port, but also supports ARC, something the OnePlus TV lacks. So, if you want to connect a soundbar via ARC to the TV, then the Mi TV is the one to consider. If you are looking for a TV for OTT content consumption or set-top-box content consumption, then either of the two should work for you.
