LG Display shows off 12″ display that can stretch by 14″

Can you stretch your phone’s display? Perhaps you can if you buy a phone with a bigger screen than before but there’s no way you can stretch it. Well, that’s where LG Display is making a monumental shift with its latest 12-inch display that can be stretched to a size of 14-inch and can rebound to its original size as well.

LG Display Announced Stretchable Display

Dubbed Free-Form Displays, the latest announcement from LG Display shows a futuristic 12-inch stretchable display that can be stretched, pulled, twisted, and bent without any physical damage. Unlike foldable displays on Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 or others, Free-Form Displays from LG will stretch and can be subjected to twists and turns without any issue.

According to the announcement, the display uses a base substrate made up of silicon that is used in contact lenses. It uses micro-LEDs of less than 40 micrometers in size that collectively offer both durability and resolution. LG Display’ stretchable display uses spring wirings on the circuits instead of the usual straight wiring that further enhances folding and bending. To put a number, the display can be stretched by 20%.

The 12-inch stretchable display offers a high pixel density of 110ppi which is seen on 40” 4K TVs. There are full-fledged RGB capabilities onboard. Although we have seen displays that have higher density such as the 2.7” prototype from Royole that had a 120ppi density.

LG Display is planning to use the stretchable display on the skin, furniture, fashions, gaming, and mobility among other industries where the stretchable nature can be instrumental. It even points out that the displays can be used on automobiles and aircraft depending upon the use cases.

At the moment, the stretchable display is under development and the research is expected to conclude by 2024 only. It remains to be seen what avenues LG Display’ stretchable displays intersect once they are officially available.
