Generative AI in iOS 18

On Thursday, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple held its quarterly earnings calls. At the meeting, the company revealed details about its revenue. Further, CEO Tim Cook also talked about the generative AI features the company is working on for the iPhone 16 series. Since both developments are crucial and will impact the routes they will take shortly, let’s discuss both in detail.

Apple’s Quarterly Revenue Stands Strong

During the earnings call, Apple revealed that it made USD 119.58 billion in revenue during Q1 2024. For those catching up, the company fiscal year begins on the last Sunday of September. Hence, the company made the aforementioned amount during October, November, and December last year. These are the first three months, including the iPhone 15 lineup sales, Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and the AirPods Pro 2 (with USB-C).

Out of the USB 119.58, iPhone revenue stood at USD 69.70 billion, while the services revenue was USD 23.12 billion. Further, Apple sold Macs and iPads worth USD 7.78 billion and USD 7.02 billion, respectively. Last but not least, the wearables, home, and accessories revenue stood at USD 11.95. The company also revealed that it has now surpassed 2.2 billion active devices.

Generative AI To Hit iPhones, iPads, And Macs Later This Year

Apple to bring Generative AI to all its devices as soon as next year

Another major highlight of the earnings call was developments related to artificial intelligence. Cook mentioned that the company is spending a tremendous amount of time and effort in the space and is excited to share the details later this year. “Let me just say that I think there’s a huge opportunity for Apple with generative AI and with AI, without getting into many more details or getting out ahead of myself,” said Cook during the meeting.

While this confirms that Apple is indeed working on generative AI features that will make their way to iOS 18 via the iPhone 16 series, the CEO didn’t speak about any particular features or abilities. Last month, Samsung pushed Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series, which contains several features that utilize on-device and cloud-based machine learning abilities.

iOS 18 To Catch Up With Galaxy AI

Apple is also expected to load iOS 18 with AI-based features. Among others, Siri, Apple Music, Messages, and other productivity apps are said to get a significant upgrade. Further, iPadOS and macOS will also get several new abilities. Although more details about the same could surface in the near future, the company tends to maintain high levels of secrecy around its work. Hence, there’s a good chance that we might not be able to gaze at them until Apple finally releases them with the new iPhone.
