iPhone 17 Pro to use custom Wi-Fi 7 chips promising significant gains

Apple is undergoing drastic changes with its upcoming products including faster chipsets, better cameras, in-house technologies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G modems, and micro-LED displays to name a few. Apple iPhone 17 series could see a switch to in-house Wi-Fi 7 promising better speeds than the current-gen Wi-Fi 6E. There’s also news about a 48MP telephoto camera that will dazzle the camera setup on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Let’s take a deeper dive to know what the latest updates are all about.

iPhone 17 Pro to use custom Wi-Fi 7 chipsets

An update coming from Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities from Hong Kong suggests the Cupertino-giant is working on custom-made Wi-Fi 7 chips to use on iPhone 17 Pro models in 2025. Switching to custom Wi-Fi 7 chips would put Broadcom’s future in jeopardy which has been shipping Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chipset to Apple for years.

The switch is expected to make through on iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max in 2025. As usual, the tech will populate to the entire iPhone 18 series a year later just as any other technologies are adapted. Even Mark Gurman of Bloomberg pointed out the same news and timeline, although he added Bluetooth chips will be made in-house as well.

Another tipster Ming-Chi Kuo puts only the Wi-Fi chips to make the switch which means we will have to wait for more concrete information to arrive before confirming if it’s just Wi-Fi or both BT and Wi-Fi modems will be switched ending ties with Broadcom in the coming years if everything falls as per the plan.

Wi-Fi 7 is expected to be 4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6E while delivering lower latency and speeds up to 6GHz on iPhone 17 Pro models. Broadcom will develop Wi-Fi 7 chips for the iPhone 16 Pro series in 2024 before the switch could happen a year later.
