iOS 18 Compatibility List Won’t Shorten This Year, Can’t Say The Same For iPadOS 18 Though

iOS 18 compatibility list

Every year, Apple releases a new version of its iOS operating system, and with it comes a list of compatible devices that support the latest iteration of iOS and its features. Last year, the iOS 17 compatibility list dropped support for three models, notably the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. This year, however, the iOS 18 compatibility list might not go shorter, as the company might not drop any models for now.

iOS 18 Compatibility List

According to a new report by 9To5Mac, iOS 18 will be compatible with all the devices that run iOS 17. In other words, Apple won’t drop support for any iPhone this year, which is a good thing, considering that a significant number of users still own the older models like the iPhone 11 or the iPhone 12. The report cites a concrete rumor from a private social media account with a strong track record, stating that the following devices will receive the iOS 18 update when it is available for everyone later this year.

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd Generation)
  • iPhone SE (3rd Generation)

This means that the oldest iPhones that might support the latest iOS 18 could be the 2018 iPhone XR and XS lineup. These phones run on the A12 Bionic processor and come with 3GB and 4GB of RAM, respectively. Although we’re a little skeptical about these models, considering that iOS 18 will come with several AI-based features that might require superior on-device processing, the rumor mill still supports them.

iPadOS 18 Compatibility List

Regarding iPads, however, Apple seems to be dropping support for three models, including the iPad (6th Generation), the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd Generation), and the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Besides these models, iPadOS 18 will be compatible with all the models that run the iPadOS 17. This leaves us with the following compatible models.

  • iPad (7th Generation) and later
  • iPad mini (5th Generation) and later
  • iPad Air (3rd Generation) and later
  • iPad Pro 2018 and later

However, this doesn’t make sense, as the second generation of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro run on the A10X Fusion processor, which is slightly faster than the A10 Fusion on the regular iPad (7th Generation). Even so, the former models won’t support iOS 18. Nonetheless, the compatibility list is based on a concrete rumor, and hence, there’s a good chance that there might be last-minute changes. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 18 at the WWDC 2024, the dates for which have already been announced.
