iOS 17.3 Beta 2 pulled back after iPhones ended up in ‘boot loop’

iPhone Boot Loop

Less than three hours after Apple rolled out iOS 17.3 Beta 2, the tech giant had to pull the plug off the update on both over the air and Download Center after iPhone users began reporting boot loop issues on their devices.

Second beta update in the iOS 17.3 line, Apple rolled out the update across iOS and iPadOS 17.3 developer betas bearing build number 21D5036c. According to a user Guilherme Rambo, the iPhones are getting trapped in a boot loop and the likely reason is a system called “backboardd”. It means users who had ‘Back Tap’ on their devices enabled. Several reports that you can come across on forums, Twitter, and Mastodon, would entail this as a probable reason.

On the other hand, some users were able to get their patch of iOS 17.3 update installed on their iPhones even with the Back Tap enabled. It begs the question of whether Back Tap is indeed crashing the system or not.

As of now, the only way out is to restore your iPhone which means getting rid of every app and downloaded content on the phone. If you haven’t updated your iPhone yet, you won’t be able to download it via OTA or Download Center. In case you have downloaded the update but not installed it, we would recommend not doing it unless you agree to potentially lose data in case you are trapped in the boot loop. If you have a backup of your data, you might attempt but we don’t advise it.

The list of affected users includes iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 series. It means you aren’t the only one facing such an issue. You can still get the iOS 17.3 beta 1 to restore bricked iPhones. Apple is currently working on getting the fix done so hold on. We will convey if there are any further updates.
