Intel announces Thunderbolt 5, the next generation of Thunderbolt data transfer protocol, with significant improvements in connectivity and bandwidth. Thunderbolt promises up to 120Gbps speed with Bandwidth Boost and support for 240W charging. Primarily, Intel targets the new technology toward content creators, gamers, and professionals who deal with hundreds of gigabytes of data every day.

Thunderbolt 5 Specifications

Currently, the best wired data transfer protocol is Thunderbolt 4, which provides up to 40Gbps of bi-directional data. However, Thunderbolt can provide data transfer speeds of up to 80Gbps and 120Gbps with Bandwidth Boost. Both content creators and professionals can benefit from such high speeds while moving large files or relaying their content on a high-resolution external display.

Thunderbolt 5 can also support multiple 8K monitors, displays with up to 540Hz refresh rate for gamers, and three 4K monitors at up to 144Hz refresh rate. It also facilitates two times more bandwidth for external SSDs, eGFX, creator tools, and other tasks requiring more bandwidth. Further, it is compatible with the latest industry standards, including USB4 V2, Display Port 2.1, and PCl Express Gen 4, along with support for previous versions.

Intel mentions in the press release that Thunderbolt 5 will ensure that modern PC users can enjoy the highest-quality visuals and immersive gameplay experience with low latency. However, computers and laptops based on Thunderbolt 5 will start arriving in the market next year, in 2024. In addition, we should also see accessories like monitors, storage drives, and docks with the new technology soon.
