A few days back news broke out that the Indian government is planning to ban Chinese phones that are priced below ₹12000. The Bloomberg piece that reported this eluded at the struggling state of domestic brands amid the vexing competition from Chinese players. It was expected to be a move to push the Chinese smartphone makers out of the lower-priced segment which would leave space for Indian brands. However, CNBC TV18 has learned from its sources close to the government that “there is currently no such proposal under consideration”.

No ban on Chinese phones

Chinese brands can breathe a sigh of relief as CNBC TV18 reports that the government of India hasn’t proposed to ban China-branded smartphones in the sub-12K segment.

The publication then goes on to share its interaction with Industry experts and opinion leaders about this whole matter.

Chinese smartphone ban

Pankaj Mohindroo

One of them is Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) who says, “The industry is not divided between Indians, Americans, Chinese, there is no division like that. It is a division in the mind of the media perhaps and that is how it is reported. All the companies from China are producing in India. What has unfortunately happened is that the Indian companies have not performed up to expectation and there was a major shrinkage in their market share and that is a matter of great concern”.

He highlighted the need for nurturing the local brands while also appreciating the relevance of the Chinese supply chain in the global smartphone ecosystem.
