How To Insert Indian Rupee Symbol in MS Word

The Indian currency was originally mentioned as Rs. But ever since IIT Guwahati professor D. Udaya Kumar designed a brand-new symbol for the Indian Currency (₹) it is now considered the official Unicode standard. After the unveiling of the symbol in 2010, most keyboards come with the currency symbol. It is available in MS Office versions 2010, 2013, and Office 365.

However in case your keyboard doesn’t have the INR symbol, you can still type it on MS Word. Just follow these simple steps and you will get the rupee symbol in your document. There are various methods to insert a rupee symbol in a Word document. We will discuss them all one by one.

There are several ways to insert a rupee symbol in MS Word-

1. Changing Keyboard Layout to English (India)

  • Search for Settings in the search bar located on the taskbar and open it.
  • Click on “Time and Language”.
  • Click on the “Language Button”.
  • Click on the default language which is English (United States) and then click on ‘Option’ for more languages.
  • Next in the language option window, scroll down to keyboards and click on “add a keyboard”.
  • Next, select English (India) from the installed language packs.

Note- If you are using Windows 10 or 11, this method can be followed with some variations.

2. Inserting Rupee Symbol in MS Word using Keyboard

Most of the keyboard manufacturers have installed the new rupee symbol on their keyboards.

  • If you have such a keyboard, press Ctrl+ Alt+₹, and the symbol will be added to your word file.
  • If you don’t have the rupee icon, press Ctrl+Alt+4 keys together.
  • You can also press the side Alt key (Alt_GR)+₹ symbol if it is available on your keyboard.
  • The rupee symbol can also be added using the left-side Alt key and then type 8377 on the numeric pad.

3. Inserting Rupee Symbol in MS Word Using Insert Function

  • Open an MS Word file and click on the Insert tab in the menu.
  • Under the symbols section, click the symbol drop-down.
  • When you reach the symbol screen, click the “Subset” dropdown and select “Currency Symbols”.
  • Next, select the Indian rupee symbol and click on Insert.
  • The Indian rupee symbol will be inserted into your Word document.

4. Add Rupee Symbol to Word Using Character Map

Character Map is a facility in MS Word for Windows OS, which is used for viewing characters present in installed fonts. It is also used in checking the keyboard input used for entering characters and for copying characters to the clipboard when someone types.

  • In Windows Search, type Character Map. Click on the app to open it.
  • The default font will be set as Arial but you can set Tahoma, Verdana, or Comic Sans MS.
  • Click on the advanced view checkbox.
  • Now enter 20B9 in the Go to Unicode input box to highlight the Indian Rupee Symbol.
  • Select and copy the rupee symbol.
  • Paste it onto the Word document.
