Google’s Find My Device Network Finally Has A Launch Date, Sort Of

Last year, Google announced its Find My Device network, which would leverage the billions of Android devices out there. Like Apple’s Find My network, Google’s Find My Device would help locate missing smartphones, trackers, and compatible headphones. While the Alphabet-owned company was looking forward to an imminent launch, it got delayed as Google and Apple worked together to set a standard to help users prevent unwanted tracking using this technology.

Google’s Collaboration With Apple Delayed The Find My Device Launch

Even though the standard was ready in December 2023, Apple only recently implemented it with the iOS 17.5 beta. Nonetheless, Google has now sent an email with the launch date for its Find My Device network. In the email, Google explains how the network will help users locate their devices even if they’re offline. Further, the network will also support compatible Fast Pair accessories and help users locate them when disconnected from the companion device.

Find My Device To Support A Variety Of Gadgets

This should include supported headphones, earbuds, and trackers that users can attach to their wallets, keys, or bikes. Concluding the email, Google mentions that the Find My Device network will launch “in three days,” which could imply that the launch will take place either on April 7 or April 8, 2024. Users will be notified on their Android devices once the feature is enabled. Although all users have yet to receive the email from Google, those who have received it can opt out of the network.

Google Will Allow Users To Opt Out Of Find My Device

The mail contains an option to opt out of the Find My Device network. Although this will prevent users’ devices from participating in the network, they can still use the network to view their device’s location when they’re online. Further, users’ choice to opt in or out will apply to all Android devices linked with their Google Account. For those who wish to opt out of the service after it is launched, head to Settings > Google > All Services > Find My Device and turn the feature off.

Moreover, Google’s Find My Device network will help millions of Android users locate their lost devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, or supported headphones. It will function similarly to how Apple’s Find My network works, where a lost device is located using the Apple devices nearby. Since there are more Android devices, owners should be able to find lost ones via the Google Find My Device network without any trouble.
