Google Pixel Fold 2 might launch with Tensor G4 SoC & more RAM

Google Pixel Fold 2

2023 was a year of foldable phones. Google joined the wagon with its Tensor G2-powered Google Pixel Fold which made its debut at the Google I/O 2023. Although we haven’t heard about Pixel Fold 2 for a long time now, it seems the next-gen fold is in the making and will arrive with a Tensor G4 SoC under the hood skipping last year’s Tensor G3 SoC.

The folks at Android Authority have tagged an anonymous source according to whom, the book-style Google Pixel Fold 2 is in the making for a couple of months. It is likely to skip the Tensor G3 SoC which is the ideal chipset a flagship phone would pick up, however, it seems Google has plans to introduce the Tensor G4 SoC instead.

The report suggests Google has changed the codename for chipsets from ‘zuma’ (G3) to ‘zumapro’ (G4) hinting that the aforementioned updates hold some gravitas.

At present, Google Pixel Fold 2 is at the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stage and has to go through DVT >> PVT >> MP stages before it is marked as clear for debut this May 2024.

Google Pixel Fold 2 might launch with Tensor G4 SoC & more RAM

The original Google Pixel Fold arrived with a Tensor G2 SoC paired with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. Google is reportedly working on upgrading the RAM storage to 16GB LPDDR5 and 256GB UFS 4.0 storage for the Pixel Fold 2. This bump will surely give Fold 2 a much-needed performance boost given the fact that the last-gen Pixel Fold wasn’t particularly powerful.

Tensor G4 will be fabbed at Samsung before Google decides to move to TSMC for next year’s Tensor G5 SoC. Do note that you should take this info with a pinch of salt given the fact that Pixel Fold 2 might ideally get a Tensor G3 SoC. This is because Google launches a new line of chipsets during its Pixel launch later every year. It begs the question if Google is reading the G4 SoC a few months before its potential date of launch or if the Pixel Fold 2 sticks with the G3 SoC this time around.

Google Pixel Fold 2 might make it to Google I/O 2024 with upgraded RAM, a storage system, and a new chipset (G4 or G3) among others promising better performance than the original Pixel. Moreover, Google will strap the upcoming devices with AI features including its AI assistant named Pixie.
