Google Is Working On A New Foldable, Could Be The Pixel Flip

11 months ago 70

Google Pixel Flip in the works

Google released its first foldable in June 2023. The Pixel Fold with Tensor G2 and a triple camera setup is a capable smartphone. However, the phone isn’t available in the global market. Nonetheless, the latest report suggests that the California-based company is already working on the second generation of the foldable, but it isn’t that straightforward.

Google Might Be Working On A New Foldable

In the latest version of Google’s Pixel Buds app, 9To5Google has found references to an unknown device codenamed “Comet.” The publication writes in the latest APK Insight post that the device isn’t a part of the Pixel 8 series, nor the Pixel 8a. Instead, the codename could refer to an unknown Pixel Fold device. Since the Pixel Fold carried the codename “Felix,” it is not clear whether the unknown device is a direct successor of the phone.

The publication also doesn’t rule out the possibility of “Comet” being a new Pixel Flip phone. Given that most brands like Samsung and Oppo offer two types of foldable smartphones, there’s a good chance that Google wants to catch up and attract a good chunk of that market by providing exceptional camera quality and hassle-free stock Android. However, this remains a conjecture, as no solid evidence supports that the codename indeed refers to a foldable phone.

The Pixel 8 series, meanwhile, bears the codenames Shiba and Husky for the regular and Pro variant, respectively. Further, we’ve also heard rumors about the Pixel 9 series being codenamed after reptiles. Therefore, the publication speculates that “Comet” isn’t a Pixel 9 device either. If the speculation has any substance at all, and it does quite a lot of times, we might see a new foldable at the Google I/O 2024. Until then, readers should take this information with a pinch of salt.
