5 months ago 42

Google Cloud Next '24 highlights

Google’s Cloud Next ’24 event kicked off on Tuesday, April 9. At the event, the company announced several updates to its Workspace apps, which are used by millions of people across the globe. For instance, Google Meet, the popular video conferencing app, is getting translation abilities in more languages. Further, Sheets and Docs are getting an updated design to enhance users’ productivity. Last but not least, the company also announced a new tool, Google Vids, an AI-powered video creation app for work.

New Features Coming To Google Workspace Apps

Gmail

Polish draft feature in action

First, let’s talk about Help Me Write on Gmail. The feature now supports voice prompting on mobile Gmail, allowing users to provide voice commands for drafting and sending emails. Gemini in Gmail, a feature that’s available to Google One AI Premium subscribers, is getting a new instant polish feature that helps users transform notes into a complete email draft at the press of a button (without typing or speaking any prompts).

Sheets

Like Gmail, Sheets is getting new table features that “formats and organizes data in a sleek, updated design.” Users can select a template from the new building blocks, which include everything from project management to event planning. This saves the time that goes into creating spreadsheets from scratch. The new table features will be available for all Workspace plans in the coming weeks.

Docs

Google Docs is getting a new tab experience, which helps users organize related information in a single document. Further, documents with full bleed cover images (that extend from one end of the browser to the other) will make it easier to personalize documents, making them easily identifiable. This particular feature will also be available to all Workspace users in the coming weeks.

Meet

Translate for Me, a feature coming in June, will automatically detect and translate captions into the user’s preferred language. The feature will support 52 new languages, bringing the total to 69. Further, those who purchase the new AI meetings and Messaging add-on ($10) will also get Take Notes for Me, a feature that helps users take notes from an ongoing session. “AI features like Take Notes for Me (now in preview) let you drop the pen and lean into the conversation instead of taking notes,” mentions the official Google blog post.

Drive

A new add-on, AI Security, is available for enterprise Google Drive users. It will automatically identify, classify, and protect sensitive files across the company’s database. The feature uses privacy-preserving AI models trained using unique organization-specific data. It can also continuously evaluate and protect existing and new files and is available for select Workspace plans for $10 per user per month.

At the Google Cloud Next ’24 event, the Alphabet-owned company also announced a new Workspace app: Google Vids. The AI-powered video creation app can generate an editable storyboard for faster visualization, allows users to choose the overall style of the video (from the available templates), and generates the first draft with suggested scenes from stock videos, images, and background scores. The app also lets creators have a voiceover in a preset voice or their voice.
