Dimensity 9300 on Vivo X100 Pro throttles 46% in less than 2 minutes

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoC made its debut earlier this month with a different CPU that doesn’t follow the traditional cluster design. It is an octa-core chipset with high-performance cores and no power-efficient cores up its sleeves. Technically, it should offer much higher performance and speeds, however, a CPU stress test revealed a crack in the silicon’s armor.

Dimensity 9300 x Vivo X100 Pro goes through CPU Throttling Test

Unlike traditional SoCs that use a combination of high-performance and power-efficiency cores, the Dimensity 9300 uses high-performance cores and no power-efficient cores. The Vivo X100 Pro uses the same chipset along with a passive cooling system that uses a vapor chamber for heat dissipation.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC vs Dimensity 9300 SoC

Recently, it underwent a CPU Throttling Test that revealed the chipset dropped in terms of performance by 46% two minutes into the test. The chipset has a configuration of 1x 3.25GHz Cortex-X4 core, 3x 2.85GHz Cortex-X4 cores plus 4x 2GHz Cortex-A720 cores. After running a stress test, the chipset throttled its performance by 46%. The cores throttled down to a combination of 1.50GHz, 1.20GHz, and 0.60GHz. It is a massive drop when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC which was able to sustain 80% of its performance after 10 minutes of CPU stress test.

Having an active cooling system i.e. a fan instead of a passive vapor chamber could have helped achieve better performance with better heat dissipation.

For the unversed, a CPU stress test blasts each core on a chipset to test its ability to withstand stress at max load. Of course, both Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple A17 Pro chipsets may have better-sustained performance, but there are several factors to be considered to determine how hot a chipset can be before it starts throttling. For the skeptics, the chipset should perform well in normal use since there are only limited use cases that put the chipsets to hard work such as high-octane gaming or benchmarking tests.
