ChatGPT Can Now Remember Things: What This Means And How It Effects Users

7 months ago 43

ChatGPT memory

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced that it is testing memory with ChatGPT. From now on, the chatbot will be able to remember things you discussed with it across all chats. It is a significant development as it is a step toward artificial general intelligence. Currently, the feature is rolling out to a few ChatGPT free and Plus users this week.

How Does ChatGPT’s Memory Work?

In its official blog post, OpenAI explains how ChatGPT’s memory works. Users can ask the chatbot to remember certain things. Over time, they’ll notice ChatGPT’s responses tailored to the information it remembers. “Remembering things you discuss across all chats saves you from having to repeat information and makes future conversations more helpful,” writes OpenAI in its blog.

Users can ask ChatGPT to remember several things, such as their formatting preference for summarization, the preferred location for their vacation, or anything related to what users take the chatbot’s help for. OpenAI also mentions that ChatGPT’s memory will improve as users interact with it. A good example in the OpenAI blog states that users can say they have a toddler who loves jellyfish. When they ask the tool to create a birthday card, it will include the jellyfish wearing a birthday hat.

Users Can Tell The Chatbot To Forget Something, Or Turn Off The Feature Via Settings

“You can explicitly tell it to remember something, as it what it remembers, and tell it to forget conversationally or through settings.” In other words, users can control what the chatbot remembers and how long it remembers it, as they can turn the feature off manually via Settings > Personalization > Memory. Users can also view and delete specific memories or clear all memories in Settings > Personalization > Manage Memory. It is important to mention that deleting a chat doesn’t delete its memory.

The Memory Function Is Also Available For Team And Enterprise Users

Those who want to have a conversation without using the chatbot’s memory can use temporary chat. These chats won’t appear in history, won’t use memory, and won’t be used to train ChatGPT either. The memory functionality will also be available for Team and Enterprise users. The AI chatbot can remember their tone, voice, and format preferences and automatically apply those to anything. When coding, users can tell the chatbot their programming language and frameworks.

Is This The First Step Toward Artificial General Intelligence?

In the end, ChatGPT having a memory will help users so that they won’t have to start every conversation by sharing the essential details, such as their preferences, likes, dislikes, etc. So the next time users ask it to suggest some vacation plans or create a day schedule, it will remember about the place users mentioned they wish to go or that they don’t like to schedule meetings after 6 PM. For those who aren’t comfortable with the chatbot having a memory, they can disable the feature in the settings, as mentioned above.
