Can You Track Your Loved Ones From Google Contacts?

Back in May 2023, Android Police reported that Google Contacts might integrate location-sharing abilities in the future. Although the publication said the feature could roll out with Android 14, that did not happen. Now, as part of the latest update, the app has indeed rolled out the ability to share one’s live location with a contact. This could be a helpful feature for those who are concerned about the whereabouts of their loved ones.

Update Your Google Contacts App To Get The Location Tracking Feature

The Google Contacts version 4.22.37.586680692 contains the location-sharing feature. If you have one Gmail address saved in the Google Contacts app, and the user has been sharing their location via Google Maps, you will see a small Maps button underneath options. Tapping this button opens a Google Maps route to the user’s location, showing you the directions and estimated arrival time to the designated location. You can also set notifications for when the user arrives near you.

The Feature Is More Useful Than It Seems

This is a straightforward yet effective addition as it lets you keep tabs on your loved ones, where they are, and whether they have reached their intended destination. The maps button is available in the contact section for a person right below the name and the various options to contact them. Due to this, if at some point you feel that the person is not on the right path or might need assistance, you can view their live location by tapping on the Google Maps card and then navigate back to give them a call.

Of course, the feature only works if the other person has shared their location with you (and for the time they have shared the location). Moreover, the location tracking via contact cards feature is another reason Android users use Google Contacts as their go-to calling app. Since Google has just started rolling out the feature, it might take time for everyone to be available.
