Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Apple Watch Series 9 are getting the watchOS 10.1 upgrade, adding quite a lot of new features to the smartwatches. Apple revealed these devices in September 2023 with watchOS 10 and promised to ship a few features via a software update soon, such as the new double-tap feature that enables users to tap their thumb and index finger together to perform specific actions. However, the feature wasn’t available on the devices at launch.

The watchOS 10.1 Adds Double-Tap Gesture And NameDrop

With watchOS 10.1, Apple has released the double-tap gesture for Watch Ultra 2 and Watch Series 9. With the feature, users can answer/end phone calls, open a Smart Stack, take a photo on the iPhone, start/stop the timer, snooze alarms, play/pause music, etc.

The gesture is useful, especially since it eliminates the need to use both hands to interact with the Apple Watch. So, when users have a coffee mug in the other hand or are holding something with it, they can simply tap their index finger and thumb together to interact with the content on the screen. However, this feature is only available on the latest Apple Watches.

Apple’s watchOS 10.1 also brings NameDrop, a feature that allows users to exchange useful contact information with someone else by holding their smartwatch or iPhone near the other person’s device. Users can choose whether to share their contact information, share/receive contact information, or only receive the data. Apart from the double-tap gesture and NameDrop, watchOS 10.1 brings other performance improvements and bug fixes.

How To Download watchOS 10.1 On Your Apple Watch?

To download the latest watchOS 10.1 update, users should head to the Watch app on their iPhone, hit General, select Software Update, and then Download and Install. To install the latest operating system on the Apple Watch, press the Digital Crown, hit Settings, go to General > Software Update, and select Download and Install.
