Over the years, Apple has moved a significant portion of its manufacturing lineup to India. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been putting together its smartphones in India since 2017 when it began production with the iPhone SE. Last year, Apple started making the iPhone 14 in the country shortly after its global launch. However, in a few years, the company could start making a new iPhone in India well before its launch.
12 To 14 Percent Of iPhones Are Made In India
Known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a post on Medium, states that in 223, 12 to 14 percent of global iPhone shipments are manufactured in India. Further, Apple’s partner, Foxconn, makes about 75 to 80 percent of the units in the country. Kuo expects the proportion of iPhones made in India to increase to 20 to 25 percent by 2024.
iPhone 17’s Production Could Kick Off Could Kick Off Early
Kuo also says the new product introduction for the regular iPhone 17 will kick off in India in 2H24. Since the regular iPhone is the easiest to manufacture, it should avoid any complications initially. This will be the first time the company will begin developing a new iPhone outside of China.
Collaboration With Tata To Help Apple Grow In The Region
Since Apple has partnered with Tata (who has acquired Winstron’s iPhone production lines in the country), the company can strengthen its relationship with the government of India. This, in turn, will have a positive impact on the operations of the company in India and help in growth over the coming years.
By next year, Foxconn’s production of the iPhone in Zhengzhou and Taiyuan, China, could go down by 25 to 45 percent and 75 to 85 percent, respectively. This is a part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its reliance on China and shift the production of its products outside of the region.
